The Apple HD20 SC is an external SCSI hard drive made by Apple for the earliest mid-1980's Macs. It's not much more than a case which holds a SCSI drive and switching AC power supply for the drive. Apple's early software would not format any drive which did not have an Apple "ROM" in it, that is a drive sold by Apple. The drive in this photo has a partially removed top. This note is about removing the case's top. See my Mac collectables Web page for much more discussion of Apple Mac hard drives.
The case has a removable top, which has three sets of fasteners. One pair is in the back; two pairs are on the sides; one set is in the front. The strategy is to unsnap the rear fasteners; then release the side fasteners; then to lift the lid from the back and flip it over the front edge. A small flat blade screwdriver is used to push open the fasteners. Do not pry the lid off with a screwdriver, you will ding up the edge.
The rear pair of fasteners is found by looking in the vertical air vents. Here is a close up image of one. Push the visible fastener in the slot while lifting the lid above it. That part of the lid should lift up, the lid is flexible. Repeat with the other fastener in the back.
The side fasteners are found by looking along the sides - see some small rectangular holes? Here is a close up image of one, with the lid REVERSED to show the catch. Push the fastener in the slot while lifting the lid above it, starting with the read slot. That part of the lid should lift up, the lid is flexible. Repeat on the other side with that rear fastener. Then, do the ones in at the front of the sides.
The front fasteners are not accessable. After releasing all side fasteners, slowly lift from the back of the lid and use the front of the lid like a "hinge". Make sure the side fasteners are release, or you will break them like this.
